1st Term Newsletter — Rang a hAon

We have been very busy in Rang a hAon this term. Moving up the stairs to up new classroom brought about lots of exciting new adventures. We sat in new groups and we all had new jobs, which comes with the responsibility of being in first class. This year we were so lucky to play on the big yard with all the older classes and to go to the park and Mount Pleasant for yard time. This is something that we really enjoyed.

We got to use the laptops and go on a shape hunt with cameras and the IPad to find all the 2d shapes in the school. Our very special friend Zoe brought us some fantastic Finnish chocolates. She told us loads of facts about Finland before she moved home.

Venturing into the Land of Roald Dahl we got to experience the magical world of The Twits, fantastic Mr Fox and Matilda. Closer to home the novelist Roddy Doyle brought us on a worldwide adventure with Rover, who saved Christmas.

Our calculating brains were put to the test and we really enjoyed all our maths games and quizzes! Every morning we escaped to the Gaeltacht for some lessons while we practice our Irish Songs, dances, poems, chants and games.

We explored the Arctic, Siberia and of course our green Isle when learning about animals who migrate and those who hibernate. Have you seen our penguins? We also learned that light travels faster than sound and practiced this using sundials and musical instruments.

Mindfulness was very important in our daily routine and we took time out to learn how to breathe and be mindful, we spoke about our strengths and the ways we can help others. We showed this compassion in the wonderful collection we had for Focus Ireland on the second last week of this term.

Along with the hustle and bustle of our schedule, rest assured we did have some breaks where we enjoyed yoga and dancing. The ocarina was lots of fun and we are improving all the time, we enjoy learning new and old songs as well as listening to classical pieces and reflecting on them.

On a journey to develop our knowledge of the world we studied the various major world religions, festivals and places of worship. We learned the importance of respecting all people and their beliefs. We spoke about the differences among children of all ages and discussed the importance of treating everybody equally and helping those who need it whenever we can.

We are very grateful for all the help we received this year from everybody who visited our class to talk to us, to share their skills, the parents who read with us and the teachers who helped us with maths, reading, art and drama.
