SCHOOL NEWS in Brief…..

19th April 2018

From the Principal’s desk:

A huge thank you to all the parents who gave a helping hand with our annual Spring Clean Up this morning along with the Green Schools Committee and the Student Council in association with the National Spring Clean. What a beautiful morning for it to take place! The school and its surrounds are looking so much better!

On this note….it is a real testament to the work being done around environmental themes in the school as huge congratulations is owed to the Green Schools Committee and to their co-ordinators Ms. Dillon, Ms. Halpin-Duffy and Ms. Shackleton for all the work put in to achieve our third Green Flag for the school – the Travel Flag! We received the great news during the week and we will have a day of celebration later in the term to mark this great occasion for our school! Thank you to all the children, staff and parents for getting involved in bringing about this achievement.

Please check for lost property at the gate in the morning. All items left at the weekend will be donated to charity.

 From the PA:

On to a new term - and some important dates for the diary!

Thursday 19th April

The annual school clean up took place this morning.  This is a really helpful and positive event run by the school every spring.  The many hands on deck for the 30 - 45 minutes made an enormous difference to the school surroundings. Thank you to all the parents who helped out!

Friday 22nd June - The RMDS Parents End of Year Night Out!!

The Hill Pub is booked - so book the babysitters!!!

Sunday 24th June - RMDS Sports Day

Please note that due to building works taking place in Sanford Park School this year, we have had to find a shiny new venue!  We are delighted to be able to use the Alexandra College Grounds beside Kildare Place School on Upper Rathmines Rd.  The Sports Day will run from 11h00 - 14h00.  We will be recruiting for Volunteers soon and putting up posters announcing the new events planned for this year!!!!  Any ideas, volunteers at this stage - please email pa@rmds.ie.

Fundraising….

Last term saw incredible fundraising results from the parents and children!  Despite losing days of school to the bad weather, the Read-a-thon gained fantastic momentum, and we collected over €3300 at the Breakfast Party in the yard!  A fantastic result!  Well done to all the children who took part and achieved their impressive reading targets!  Huge thanks to all parents who helped co-ordinate the Read-a-thon, and of course well received Breakfast Party in the Yard!  The Easter raffle was a great success too!  We sold hundreds of tickets, and raised over a €1000!  Thank you all for your much appreciated support!  All funds raised will go towards the purchase of the Digital Interactive Screens for the remaining classrooms.

School Soccer Update:

The season is heating up as our Legends team have fought their way back into contention for the league title as we chase the magic three titles in a row. The Legends overcame initial hardship, having lost their first league game to St. Killians and having been knocked out of the cup, with resurgent, back to back 6-5, wins. Cal was the hero in both with man of the match performances against both St. Mary's and Rathmichael and 9 goals to his name. Olivia performed heroics also as recently as yesterday to head home the winner in the last minute of the game. Gavin and Andries also scored. Friday we travel to play St. Laurence's and then we face St. Patrick’s Greystones with all to play for and a fantastic shout for the title.

As for the Gladiators, having overcome Scoil Bhríde they face the Muslim National School in the second round of the plate. The match against Scoil Bhríde was a show stopper and it looked all but lost for RMDS, until Altan and Daniel turned it around with late goals to tie things up. Then to penalties, with nerves of steel, Altan and Daniel, joined with Louis to win the game with 3 fantastic penalty strikes.

Onwards and upwards,

Amal Perera
