Rang a Cúig Christmas Report

R5PH6

We had a great first term in fifth class. In maths we learnt long division, multiplying subtracting and adding fractions, angles and revision. A new thing this year is English and Irish tests on Fridays. We walked to the mosque in Clonskeagh - we had to take off our shoes before we entered the mosque. We also went to Waterways Ireland which is by the Grand Canal Dock. The building was on stilts floating over the water. There were two otters living under the building. Our tour guide's name was Joe; he showed us a piece of Canadian seaweed, zebra mussels and a fertilized swan egg!!!

R5PH5

In science we did some experiments, one was with iodine. We used a potato, a slice of bread, a piece of apple and some grains of rice. We tested which foods were carbohydrates by putting the iodine on the different foods. The apple wasn’t a carbohydrate, everything else was. We also did a balloon test. We hung up two balloons 10 cm apart and blew between them. Most of us thought that the air from our mouths would break them apart but in fact the air from our mouths drew them closer together. In history, we learnt about the Normans and the Vikings.
In art we drew Sunflowers and Starry Night by Van Gogh. We also did cool octopi and Aboriginal art. We have learnt a load of poems including, I’m wrestling with an Octopus, Silly Old Baboon, Lake Isle of Inisfree and Mid-term break. In P.E we did Gaelic football and basketball. We made lovely Christmas decorations for the classroom wall such as stockings, Christmas trees and Santa faces. We are doing A Christmas Carol for our Christmas play.
