Junior Infants are Eggcellent!

We began this term learning about winter. We read a folktale from The Ukraine called The Mitten. We made our own lap-book version of this book in which we learned a little about the Ukraine, and also winter clothes. We also explored warm materials such as wool.

We went on to learn about houses and homes. We even got to see one another’s homes on Google Maps. There are many different types of houses. Some of us live in terraced houses, some in apartments and others in semi detached houses. We even created our own village. The buddies helped us name it. They called it Buddyville!

There were many feasts and festivals to celebrate this term starting with New Year of course. This was quickly followed by Chinese New Year. We learned the famous Chinese Zodiac story. Each year is represented by an animal. The children born in 2011 are rabbits, those born in 2010 are tigers, just like Miss Coogan.

We watched some clips from the excellent movie Inside Out, while learning about our emotions. This movie teaches us that all emotions are important even sadness and fear.

We started flipping pancakes in February and read the story of The Three Little Pigs. We knew this story already of course but this time we examined materials used in buildings. We also read Owl babies and learned a great song about nocturnal animals.

Bhí an-spóirt againn le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge. Rinneamar an cleachta ar frásaí Gaeilge timpeall na scoile. Rinneamar maisiúcháin timpeall an scoil agus foghlaimid damhsa gaelach le Miss Halpin. Bhí céilí mór sa scoil again leis na Buddies agus Miss Stynes freisin.

March was really full of festivals, fun and surprises. On World Book Day we all dressed up as our favourite characters from story books. There were some wonderful characters in Junior Infants such as Harry Potter, Wilbur from Charlottes Web and even Spiderman made an appearance .

St. Patrick’s Day is always a huge celebration in RMDS. There were lots of cool tattoos and hats to be seen, and Odhran’s Dad came in to read us the story of St. Patrick in Irish. Go raibh maith agat Dualta.

There was a lot of help from three other Dads during Engineer’s Week. Thanks to Rory, Max and Cameron’s Dads as they were a great support during Engineer’s Week. We had so much fun creating balloon rockets, marble mazes, roller coasters and parachutes. We also created beautiful junk art rockets with the help of Miss Halpin.

There was more exciting news in March with the arrival of Tara Browne, Edie’s little sister. She is the second little sister born this year. Who knows, maybe she and Samika ( Sarina’s sister), will be great friends when they are 5!

We learned about Spring, and growth and change. We planted seeds and watched the story of Sid the Seed.

When Miss Reilly arrived 3 weeks ago we were very excited to have such a nice new teacher. She taught us all about the farm. We learned about the animals and their names as gaeilge. We learned a great poem called Sicíní.

Miss Reilly also read us great stories such as Looks like spilt Milk, Pig in the Pond and Farmer Duck. We did wonderful drama lessons, and made a role on the wall poster of that mean old Farmer Duck. She also taught us how to make beautiful prints in art from real vegetables. We made prints from found materials and also contact print using tinfoil.

We even had a real farmer called Anne come to visit with Seamus the lamb and her hens.

Seamus was only 15 days old.

Miss Coogan and all the boys and girls in Junior Infants would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Reilly. We will miss her so much and we hope she comes back to say hi to us.

Have an eggciting, eggsellent, eggstra special Easter.

Le gach dea ghuí

Miss Coogan
