Term 2 in Rang 4

Here are some of the things we did this term in Rang 4.

In English we completed the novel “Holes”, watched the movie and compared and contrasted the two. We discussed lots of themes in the book such as discrimination, racism and miscarriage of justice. We just completed the “Write a Book” project where we used Google Documents to type our final drafts. We are very proud of our books. We’re looking forward to the assembly in May. We went to the Print Museum on World Book Day in March and saw how printing was done in the past and made paper hats. We swapped books on that day as well.

In Core Curriculum some things we studied were Lent, St. Patrick and Easter customs. We studied Judaism and went on a trip to the Jewish Museum. We talked about the Spring Equinox and studied a chapter on “The Sun” in SESE. Kitty did a powerpoint presentation for the class on the Vietnamese New Year. She gave fortune cookies and chopsticks (pencils) to each class member. We played a game in groups with the chopsticks.

A lady from the “Sticks and Stones Anti Bullying Programme” did a workshop with us in January.  We discussed the different types of Bullying and how we might deal with issues. We did lots of role play. It was fun but serious as well. This is part of SPHE.

With the money from the Parents’ Association pub quiz, we have organised for “Cinemagic” to come to our class in May and we will have a workshop on “Special Effects Make Up in Film”. More about that in Term 3!

We were reading buddies for Rang 1 every Monday and Tuesday for 5 weeks. It was great fun! They are great readers.

We had Seachtain na Gaeilge and had the Ceilí with Rang 5 and Rang 6. The dances we did were Ballaí Luimní , lonsaí na hlnse, Baint an Fhéir and Tonnta Thoraí. The song we did was called “Peigín Leitir Móir”. We also did Amhrán na bhFiann. We had “Duaiseanna Spotaí” and “Lucky Dip” in the classroom for speaking as Gaeilge and being Cainteoir an Lae. We also had “Bingó” to help us with our numbers.

Parents have been coming in every Tuesday and Thursday mornings to help us with our Gaeilge Léitheoireacht in class. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

Some of were involved in the Mini World Cup at lunchtime. Lena’s team won. Congratulations to her team and all those who took part.

We also did Santry trials in athletics for under 11s and under 10s and training has already started.

In Green Schools we took part in the Carbon Challenge and made lots of pledges in an effort to make a difference to the environment.

For Science, we did GIY (Grow it Yourself) “Sow and Grow” which encourages us to focus on healthy food. We sowed either cress carrots or runner beans and will water the seedlings and look after them over the holidays. The DSPCA came in to talk to us about care of animals and showed us some giant snails.

In our class we do marble jars and when the class fills up a jar of 50 marbles we get a prize. When we fill up three jars we get a bigger treat, something like a homework pass.

For movement break we did lots of skipping and finally we persevered and mastered Double Dutch. In PE we did lots of games.

In Maths we learned long multiplication which was challenging at the start but it became much easier for everybody by the end.

Some of the things we did in Visual Art were origami, stained glass windows using tissue paper, Still Life using charcoal, portraits and we made baskets by weaving paper.

We are looking forward to Term 3.
