Term Two News

Term two was a busy one for Rang a Cúig. We worked on the topic of the Great Famine in Ireland, which was a theme in our class novel, ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’. We learned about potato blight, and of the terrible malnutrition that the people of Ireland suffered as a result of food shortages at that time. We then explored the nutritional value of potatoes, and experimented on them, and other food items, to discover which foods contained starch, thus providing carbohydrates and energy. We collaboratively wrote up our experiment and results.

On Pancake Tuesday we were not in RMDS to make pancakes, but did enjoy tasty pancakes all the same. We were in St Attracta’s N.S., practising for Cór na nÓg, and had certainly worked up a good appetite for the lovely pancakes that were ready for the bus journey back to RMDS! A big thank you to Sadhbh who had kindly made pancakes for all in case I did not have enough!

In art lessons, we have been working with clay, and made mini busts after learning that sculpture was popular during the Renaissance. We created character profiles based on what we had made, and subsequently had a workshop on developing characters in story writing. The learning from Jonathan Saint’s fun workshop was then put into practice really well when working on our books for the ‘Write a Book’ project. A very interesting, informative visit from members of An Garda Síochána to our class, which happened before the workshop, perhaps inspired some of the great stories we wrote. The guards talked to us mostly about crime scene investigation and Tara, Julien and Kitty did a great job in their roles on the day.

Seachtain na Gaeilge was great fun, with a céilí, a treasure hunt in Linear Park and tráth na gceist for the two senior classes as the highlights.

The week before last, we went on a class trip to Custom House Quay to visit the Jeanie Johnston and the famine memorial. The tour was fun, fascinating, thought-provoking, and a really great way to review the history we had learned about earlier in the term. There were some nice photos taken!

Last week we had a visit from a lady called Margaret who works with the DSPCA. She told us interesting stories about animals they take in, and we got to see some giant African snails!

Our term ended with Rang a Cúig’s fantastic performance for parents and teachers, with a huge number attending to see us participate in Cór na nÓg in the National Basketball Arena. An orchestra accompanied us singing an impressive repertoire of songs that we had been practising all year, and we absolutely wowed all who attended. It was great!

Well done Rang a Cúig!
