From the Principal’s Desk….

Welcome back to you all this term. I hope you had a lovely restful break and wishing a very happy new year to you all!

We have gotten off to a good start this term. It is business as usual despite all!

Thank you for all your co-operation in helping us open safely for our children and staff.

This term we welcome four student teachers to our school and look forward to them integrating into our school over the next few weeks.

Regarding Covid-19, as always, if a child has any new onset symptoms and feels unwell or seems off-form,  do not send them to school and contact your GP for advice if necessary. This video from the DES highlights the needs for children to stay home if they are unwell.

In addition, do not send your child to school if they have:

  • Been in close contact with a household member who has tested positive for Covid-19
  • Been living with someone who is unwell and may have Covid-19

A reminder that if a pupil is identified as being a close contact of a case of Covid-19, adherence to the current advice on the HSE website in relation to restricted movements and testing is required.

Parent-focused public health advice about COVID-19 symptoms is available here.

Please check the RMDS Calendar on our website for all dates of upcoming events.

Finally, as the week draws to a close, we acknowledge the sad and tragic loss of a wonderful young member of our teaching community in horrific circumstances this week. Our whole school community extends its sympathy to the Murphy family and to Ashling’s friends, colleagues and pupils as they try to come to terms with their loss. May Ashling rest in peace.

THIS WEEK’S

News from around the Classes…..

Junior Infants

We are very excited to be back in school.  Our new theme in Aistear is the North and South Pole.

We cut out Arctic animals and stuck them on a background.  We are learning about the Polar Bear.

We drew pictures of Polar Bears in the snow using chalk.  Here are Cillian and Aoibhin’s pictures.

Senior Infants

Welcome to 2022. We are practicing a drama as Gaeilge about Hansel and Gretel.

We’ve worked hard this week and today we brought our teddies and dolls in to see our classroom. They are having lots of fun. We are singing our songs and showing them what we do in Senior Infants.

Rang 1

Rang a hAon are so happy to be back in school after the Christmas break. Everyone was very excited to return to the classroom and share their news from the holidays. We have been very busy since we've been back, learning all about Money in Maths and about Maps in Geography. We have been talking about our New Year's Resolutions and what we would like to achieve in 2022. We set different goals for at home, in school and personal resolutions too! In Art, we read a story called The Dot and created our own dot-inspired artwork. In PE, we used the gymnastic equipment which was so much fun and we set up a café on the Roof Garden.

Rang 2

Happy New Year to everyone in our RMDS community. It is great to be back together again. We really hit the ground running in Rang 2 since we returned to school last Thursday.  We made beautiful colourful firework art to celebrate the new year. Swimming continues as does our knitting. Some of us are flying at our knitting and others are still persevering at this brand new skill.

As a school we are focusing on Anti-Bullying this term. We have learned a lovely song that Rang 4 suggested by Harry Styles . We are also learning some anti-bullying strategies such as feeling good about ourselves, looking out for one another  and also telling someone we trust if we are being bullied.

We are learning about Caitheamh Aimsire (pastimes/ hobbies) in Gaeilge.

We are also learning about Data in maths. This week we made a class pictogram about how we like our hot chocolate. Mmmmmm! Time to go now!

Thanks to Riad and Rhea for the great pictures!

Rang 3

We have had a great start back for the New Year. To start on a positive note we talked about what makes a good friend and what qualities we have as a friend. We then paid each other compliments and made our compliment posters. Have a look at them here! We will stick them up on the wall as our compliment wall. We also wrote 10 things to do more of in 2022 that makes us happy.

In English this week we started a book called ‘Bill’s New Frock’. We have started to talk about gender inequalities which is one of the issues that appears in the book. We are very excited about it and have already had some very interesting conversations.  We also started a cool six minute podcast which we really love. Ask us about the story.

In maths we have been learning about decimals, especially tenths.

In science we did experiments with magnets. We found that not all metals are magnetic.

For P.E we used lots of equipment in the hall for gymnastics.

At our Friday meeting we discussed the yard and how we are going back to having football free days. When we have two courts we can play soccer and when we only have one it's a football free day. We felt this is fair as lots of people felt there was not enough room to play other games when soccer is being played. We have also arranged a soccer tournament so that we can involve people who don’t usually play football and would like to try.

We started the topic of Egypt in geography and history.

In Gaeilge we have been talking about winter and telling the date correctly. Ask us what date it in is Gaeilge. Cén dáta atá ann?

Our reward for keeping our class promises this term is a baking afternoon! 3rd Class bake off!

Rang 4

This week in maths we learned about symmetry and did revision.  We did Mental Maths tests. We also did Daily 10 some of the days of this week. Daily 10 is a maths game.

We did a lot of research on Helen Keller this week in English. We are going to make mini-books about her. We used Epic Reading (which is an online reading website with different e-books) to research her.  When we are finished researching Helen Keller we will make different mini-books about a famous Irish person!

We enjoyed our art lesson a lot because we were making fabric animals out of reused materials. We had lots of fun!

This week in Gaeilge we did a lot of work on the weather. We also did role-play as weather forecasters.

In PE this week Mr. Fairbrother took two groups down to the hall to have a go on the climbing frame and do some gymnastics. The other half did Spellings for Me.

Also at lunch-time we watched different videos about famous women on Epic.

Thanks for tuning in! Hope you enjoyed hearing about our week!

Rang 5

There were a lot more people in school this week than last but we still were missing a few people each day, including our teacher, so Ms. Brennan was teaching us most of this week.

We started each day with Mindful Colouring while listening to relaxing guitar music. Ms. Brennan checked our homework while we did this and was very happy with our effort!

For PE we split into three groups to do gymnastics in the hall. We rotated the groups between the climbing frame, the box and balancing activities. It was fun to do something different for PE!

In maths we worked on multiplying using decimals. We started back on our Spellings For Me programme and almost everyone has their new list of learning words for the coming term.

We learned about the Normans invading Ireland last week and talked about the Anglo-Irish Treaty which was 100 years ago. We watched a video about some debates that went on at that time between pro and anti-treaty people.

This week we discussed different communities we are part of and designed our own communities coat of arms, showing 4 communities each of us belongs to.

Look at the photos to see some!

We are looking forward to the weekend now! Enjoy!

Rang 6

This week in Rang 6 we have been doing lots of fun activities like New Year's artwork and we wrote goals for the New Year that we will be opening again in June.

In maths we have been working on long division with decimals and we’re starting to use calculators.

In English this week we have been learning all about poetry. We have written a few poems ourselves. Today we focussed on Haikus.

In SESE we have been learning about Gandhi and we have also been learning about trade, barter and the origin of money.

We did P.E on Thursday where we did gymnastics. We worked on our balancing, strength and jumping! It was lots of fun!

Thanks very much for reading everyone!
