Rang a Cúig- Our Water Ways Tour - October 23rd

Rang a Cúig headed to the Water Ways visitor centre next to the Liffey. Joe was our Tour guide,   first he showed us what life was in the Liffey, like Zebra Mussels and plants.  Zebra Mussels are a big problem as they can multiply fast and kill other Liffey animals and fish.

Next we went outside and we saw lots of buildings, one of them was the old Bolands flour mill, and Bewleys was the tall building that used to be a sugar refinery but closed down because it was too dangerous.  It was the first fire proof building in Ireland. We saw a tall glass tower that was where they launched a BMW last year, it used to be the Lough keepers cabin. We also saw an old biscuit factory that was no longer making biscuits, and the Google building, which is the tallest building in Dublin.

Then we saw some seagulls and we chased them away. Joe showed us a cone that was covered in Zebra Mussels. Then we saw the Bord Gais Energy theatre and the Marker hotel on Misery Hill. It is called that because all the criminals that were killed were brought there and piled up, also dead bodies of the normal people. The criminals that were not killed had to bring lepers to Misery Hill because that was the only place they were allowed camp. Next we passed the U2 wall, on Windmill Lane, where we saw lots of graffiti. Lots of famous people recorded songs in this building. After that we came to 3 locks where we learned more about the history of the Liffey. We turned around and came to a mosaic of a dragon boat and learned about dragon boating. We went back to the visitor centre and had lunch and played interactive games, we all had a great day.
